At the NPC Seed Certification Meeting in Memphis Tennessee on December 2, 2013, State certification managers drafted a preliminary set of recommendations on how seed certification officials and the potato industry as a whole need to address BRR. We recognize that the best management for BRR is prevention including clean seed stocks and prevention through sanitation on-farm, and for any truck or equipment visiting the farm. In the case of a BRR outbreak, a two-tier approach was drafted that involves both the commercial growers in cooperation with the processing industry, and the seed growers under the oversight of their state certification officials. These recommendations will be presented to the NPC Legislative Affairs Committee in San Antonio on January 11. The gathering at the Washington/Oregon Potato conference provides a unique opportunity for discussion on a path forward to limit outbreaks of BRR with representatives of the Northwestern potato industry including seed producers, commercial producers and processors, and state certification officials.
